AWCD Hike for 19 January 2023
Hello hikers! Our AWCD Hike this week is not a hillwalk, but a ramble on the shores of Bull Island. Although Bull Island came about as the result of human activity – the construction of the Bull Island wall in 1825 - it is now a National Bird Sanctuary, a biosphere reserve, a National Nature Reserve, a Special Protection Area under the EU Birds Directive, and a Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive.
Date: Thursday, 19 January 2023
Hike: We will meet just outside the Raheny DART Station and walk from there to and across the causeway bridge onto the island. We’ll stop briefly at the Interpretive Center if it is open, then turn south on Dollymount Strand and walk to the south end of the island. We’ll cross back to the mainland on the Bull Wall, then turn north and walk along Clontarf Road, then through St. Anne’s Park. Please bring binoculars if you have them.
Those that would like to can join us for lunch at a local café after the walk.

Meeting time: 10:00
Hike time: 3 hours
Please bring: 1 liter water, snack, rain gear, hat and gloves
