AWCD Walk for 2nd June 2022 –

Bray Head, Co Wicklow

Hello AWCD hillwalkers!  We hope you will join us for our next hill walk on Bray Head.

This walk was chosen for both its convenient location on the DART line, but also for its magnificent panoramic views from Bray Head Cross across the seaside town of Bray to the north, the Irish Sea to the east, the Dublin Mountains to the west and the Wicklow Mountains to the southwest.

Please note that this is a more challenging hillwalk then some of our more recent flat walks. Hiking boots are necessary and hiking poles are advised (especially if it’s a wet day). While the walk begins on paved footpaths along the Bray promenade, it will take us through a grassy field, well-worn dirt paths and some areas with loose stone and exposed tree roots. Once we reach the cross, we will continue south along the high coastal path, eventually looping back towards the cross and down the hillside.

*Note: This is NOT the Bray to Greystones cliff walk, although both have similar starting points, for this walk we will be hiking up the hill to the cross at the peak (243m elevation).

The route we will take is about 9 KM long and should take around 3.5-4 hours to complete.

Date:  Thursday 2nd June 2022

Description: Moderate hillwalk up Bray Head.

Meeting place

Bray Town Council Car Park,

Strand Rd, Ravenswell, Bray, Co. Wicklow

From the DART Station - walk towards Platform Pizza, cross Strand Road towards the sea.

If driving- pay & display parking is available in the Bray Town Council Car Park.

Meeting time: 9:30 am

Hike time:  3.5-4 hours

Public toilets: located on the promenade

Please bring:  1 liter water, lunch and snack, rain gear, sunscreen, hat & hiking boots. Hiking poles if you have them.

Also, long pants or shorts with high socks is advised as a portion of this walk does pass through a path with some longer grass.

I have been asked by the AWCD to point out that walkers should be aware that they are responsible for their own safety and that they are NOT covered by the AWCD for Personal Accident Insurance. To hike with the Hillwalking group you must be a member of Mountaineering Ireland which provides us with insurance cover. If you have not walked with us before, you are allowed one guest walk before joining Mountaineering Ireland.  You will need to sign a Guest Waiver Form. I will bring these on the walk.

Please sign up through Wild Apricot by the end of Wednesday (1st June) if you plan to join us on the walk.  We will be setting up carpools if required; please let me know if you can drive, and the nearest DART/LUAS station at which you can collect people.  Carpool riders will be asked to pay 10 euro to their driver to help defray the cost of petrol.

I will set up a WhatsApp group for this hike. Thank you & I look forward to seeing you on Thursday!
